There is a place within us all that is opened when art enters our life, a warm and mysterious place deep within our soul!
I am an artist and this is my story.....I was born and bred in Bacup, Lancashire in 1965, one of fraternal twins. I moved to Birmingham at the age of 17 to study Fine Art at Birmingham Polytechnic where I gained a B. A. Honours degree creating large semi-abstract paintings and collages influenced by bands, musical instruments and the rock ‘n’ roll scene of Birmingham.
After leaving polytechnic I got a job as a graphic designer where I worked for 22 years. But now I have chosen to concentrate on a career as an artist.
I have only just started to paint again in the last few years and discovered that I enjoy painting portraits, this has led to me concentrating on ‘portraits’ of female icons of the 1940’s and 50’s. I would like to think I am creating more than just a representation of an image but that I am recreating their glamour, style, emotion and raw sexuality, perhaps capturing their very soul. As with all art my painting has developed over time to become something softer & subtler.
I truly love colour – I use strong colours although I also work from black & white images and then ‘feel’ what colours to use. I love to add textures – using anything I can lay my hands on and add line work after – rhythmical lines and shapes which I feel are quite musical. Music obviously is a great influence, sometimes I have a song in my head while I paint
